OUR STORY
Where were you in 1960? John F. Kennedy was elected President and a bar opened on S Austin St. in San Marcos. The street name changed to S. LBJ a few years later. The bar that opened at that spot was still there.
Sixty years have passed, the bar has changed names and owners several times and we are still here. We are Chances “R.” The oldest continuous liquor establishment in San Marcos. We started as Hutton’s Key club then the Angnew Club, L.O.’s, and The Restless Wind. It stayed the Restless Wind for fifty years and become Chances “R” in 2013. The current owners have had the Restless Wind – Chances “R” for forty seven years.
A lot has changed around town but we have pretty much stayed the same. We are a bar. We believe in quality drinks, good service and a laid back, relaxed atmosphere. There is always good music, pool and Texas shuffleboard. You can hang out inside or enjoy the outdoors on our patio – all in an adult atmosphere.
There is no better place to meet friends or make new ones. If your club or association wants to have a meeting or social get together, we are the place to do it. We are a twenty-one establishment and a good place to drink, listen to good music and still carry on a conversation.
You can image after sixty years this bar has some very interesting stories to tell. There is the time Bob Donnelly took down the San Antonio bank robber. Then there’s the story about the California bounty hunter. We will never forget how the original owner Sam Houston Johnson got costumers to leave at closing time. Sam’s uncle was Lyndon Johnson. He would have been so proud of Sam. Then we had the two cowboys who rode their horse in the bar. Every now and then the Texas Rangers would stop by to see how the sport bookies were doing. As you can see, we have seen them all. Come by and I promise you will like us and maybe you can have a story or two while you are here.
